Teaching

Courses at IIT Kharagpur.

Undergraduate and graduate courses in the Department of Metallurgical & Materials Engineering.

Current Courses (Autumn 2026)

Phase Transformation and Heat Treatment of Materials

UG · Core · Autumn 2026
Co-instructor: Prof. Shiv Brat Singh

A core undergraduate course on phase diagrams, solid-state transformations, diffusion, solidification, and heat treatment of engineering alloys. Includes case-based discussions linking phase transformations to industrial alloy processing and design.

Heat Treatment of Materials Laboratory

UG · Laboratory · Autumn 2026
Co-instructor: Prof. Sujoy Kumar Kar

Laboratory course complementing the phase transformation lecture series. Students perform heat treatment experiments and analyze results using optical and electron microscopy, developing hands-on understanding of processing–structure–property relationships.

Case Studies in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering

UG · Core · Autumn 2026
Co-instructors: Prof. Koundiniya NTBN, Prof. Koushik Biswas, Prof. Manish Kumar Kar

A case-based course emphasizing real-world materials engineering challenges including failure analysis, alloy design, manufacturing, and advanced characterization. Students analyze industrial case studies to develop engineering judgment and problem-solving skills.

Prior Teaching Experience

During his doctoral work at IIT Delhi, Dr. Singh served as Head Teaching Assistant for undergraduate materials science courses across eight semesters (2018–2022), designing tutorials, laboratory sessions, problem sets, and solution manuals.

  • Introduction to Materials Science and EngineeringIIT Delhi, 2018–2022 (Head Teaching Assistant (Tutorials & Labs))
  • Introduction to Engineering and ProgramIIT Delhi, 2020 (Teaching Assistant)

Student Advising

The group welcomes B.Tech and M.Tech project students each year for BTP, DDP, and R&D project work. Interested students should reach out at least one semester in advance with a brief note on their background and research interests.
