Dr. Chetan Singh

Assistant Professor · Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering · IIT Kharagpur

Whiting Fellow · Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute · Johns Hopkins University

Dr. Chetan Singh's research focuses on lightweight metallic materials (Mg and Al alloys), reactive and energetic metal powders, ultracryogenic mechanical behavior, and mechanism-based alloy design — with the long-term goal of bridging synthesis, processing, microstructural evolution, and performance across multiple length scales.

He completed his Ph.D. at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (2022) under Prof. Jayant Jain. His thesis — funded through the Prime Minister's Research Fellowship (PMRF), awarded to fewer than 1% of applicants nationwide — developed novel Mg–Ca–Sc alloys as biodegradable implant materials. He was subsequently a Postdoctoral Researcher at Chungnam National University, Republic of Korea (2023–2024), and an Assistant Research Scientist at the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute, Johns Hopkins University (2024–2026), before joining IIT Kharagpur as Assistant Professor in 2026.

Current Members

The IIT Kharagpur group is actively forming. We are recruiting motivated PhD students, M.Tech/B.Tech project students, and postdoctoral researchers with backgrounds in metallurgical engineering, materials science, mechanical engineering, or physics.
